How to Care for Your Spendless Boots!
Welcome to our guide on how to care for your Spendless boots! As a footwear brand, we understand the importance of investing in a quality pair of shoes that can withstand the harsh winter seasons in New Zealand.
Your boots are more than just a fashion statement; they protect your feet from the elements, and it's only fair that we take good care of them in return. Keeping your shoes in top condition can seem daunting, but don't worry; we're here to help.
Our Spendless Shoes New Zealand team has gathered all the tips and tricks to make caring for your Spendless boots, whether for men or women, a breeze.
The key to maintaining the cleanliness of your footwear is to prevent it from becoming dirty in the first place, and our guide will include that, too! Let's get started.
Why is it essential to keep the boots clean?
You may wonder why you must go through the necessary hassle of caring for boots when you can toss them in the closet and leave them there. Allow us to provide you with some of the reasons.
1. Avoid Foot Odour
Unlike other shoes, boots don't allow for proper airflow, which can trap unpleasant smells and harmful microorganisms inside the shoe. Keeping your footwear clean will prevent the odour and pathogens from going to your feet.
2. Prevent Germ Transmission
Keeping your boots clean and well-maintained is an essential step in preventing the transmission of germs within your home because, when you wear dirty footwear, you risk bringing bacteria and dirt from the outside into your home.
3. Maintain a Good Impression
Making a good first impression is essential; nothing says professional like a pair of immaculately clean and polished boots. Keeping them in top condition ensures they last longer and makes you look more presentable and respectable.
How to Keep Your Boots Clean
Step 1—Remove the laces.
Add them to a load of laundry if they need washing. You can also clean the laces by handwashing. It's a good idea to check the length of the laces and replace them if they're showing signs of wear, as this is a cost-effective way to give your boots a fresh look.

Step 2—Remove loose mud and dirt.
Remove tough dirt and grime from your boots' surface using a soft brush or cloth.
Step 3—Apply water and soap.
Mix warm water and dish soap in a small basin to create a cleaning solution. Next, use a soft cloth, wring it out, and use it to wipe down the exterior of the boots.
Step 4—Rinse the soap.
Carefully wipe away the soap mixture from the boots using a damp cloth.
Step 5—Dry the boots.
To dry your boots, use an old towel to remove as much moisture as possible. Then, leave the shoes to dry slowly, away from direct heat and sunlight, to prevent fading or cracking of the leather. This process can take around 48 hours to ensure the shoes are completely dry.
Step 6—Apply a leather boot conditioner.
Use a leather conditioner to add shine and protect your boots from stains. You can purchase a commercial conditioner or make your own by mixing one part vinegar with two parts linseed oil.
After applying the conditioner, let it sit for around 15 minutes, and then buff the shoes with a soft cloth for a polished look. This step is essential as dry, untreated leather is more prone to cracking when wet and becomes brittle.
Here's how you can remove different kinds of stains
1. Ink Stain
To remove ink stains from your boots, use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover and gently blot the stain. Be careful not to scratch the dirt, as this may cause it to spread.
Repeat the blotting process until clean. Once it's gone, wipe the area with a damp cloth and dry it with a fresh towel.
2. Oil / Grease Stain
Removing stains from your leather boots requires you to sprinkle cornflour or baking soda on the affected area. Then, gently rub the powder into the stain using a damp towel.
Allow the powder to sit overnight, then use a dry cloth to brush away any leftover material. Finally, wipe away the remaining residue with a dry cloth.
3. Other Stains
To remove stains from light-coloured leather boots, mix equal parts lemon juice and cream of tartar to create a paste. Apply the paste and leave it on for 30 minutes. Then, use a damp cloth to wipe away the paste.
Remember that using this method on dark-coloured leather shoes may cause damage, as the combination of lemon juice and cream of tartar has a slight bleaching effect.
Additional Reminders
- To protect your brand-new boots or shoes, apply a wax or protection spray before wearing them. Also, make sure to cover the heels, soles, and grooves thoroughly.
- It's essential to clean salt stains off your boots as soon as they appear, as salt can cause the leather to dry out and buckle if left untreated.
- Proper and consistent maintenance is vital for keeping your boots in excellent condition. Replace the soles or heels before they become irreparable to ensure that your shoes always look their best.
- Newspapers are an effective way to save your wet boots. Stuff them inside and allow them to dry away from direct heat. Avoid placing them near external heat sources, as this can dry out the leather too quickly and cause permanent cracks.
- Cleaning the inside of your boots is a simple task. Remove the insole first and place it on a newspaper. Gently wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then pat it dry. Repeat the process inside the footwear.
